When thinking about swimming pools, most people envision the elaborate design and landscaping associated with hotel and resort pools. While pools certainly can be used for recreational purposes a growing number of people are recognizing swimming for its exercise benefits. More and more pools are being built with fitness in mind.

A large reason why so many pools are built with fitness in mind is that swimming is a highly effective form of exercise. Not only is it an aerobic exercise comparable to walking or even running, but it is less stressful on joints because the water supports the body and reduces the force of impacts. To facilitate swimming for fitness, special pools have been designed, such as above-ground or inground lap pools.

A lap pool is a small, rectangular shaped pool that was created for the sole idea of swimming laps. The primary purpose of this pool is for exercise instead of recreational swimming. Regular swimming pools are often circular or have unique shapes, whereas the lap pools are often long and narrow. Sometimes, these pools are only one lane long - perfect for a back and forth swim.

Swimming is a great way to gain fitness technique because it is accessible to people of all physical abilities. It is easy on the joints and gently builds muscle without strain. Swimming, like any exercise will also reduce overall stress.

Often, homeowners are constrained by the size of the yard. Where space is limited, an endless pool may be installed instead. Endless pools are a type of lap pool that includes a resistance current and work like treadmills.

A neat feature to some lap pools is to have a flowing current. A one directional current can be added to both the above ground or inground lap pools. The purpose of this is to provide an endless swimming pool feature. This provides an excellent workout for the avid exerciser as they attempt to swim against the current.

Lap pools built inground can be indoor or outdoor. With the indoor versions there is the obvious benefit of not having to be effected by outdoor weather and temperature changes, but this does not mean that outdoor lap pools cannot be used all year. Heated pools are enjoyed by both private homeowners and businesses, and they create a much more comfortable swim no matter the season.

Having a lap pool installed can be very reasonably priced or extravagantly expensive. The cost is inversely proportional to the options and size of the pool. Some examples of options include a current that flows continuously and a system that controls the water temperature. Also, if you have a larger pool, it will cost more than a smaller one. But, to keep physically fit, the benefits may outweigh the price.
